Your Place KeptIsaiah 56:5

A Place and a Name

This message is for the man who was the one who opened every gathering with prayer in his community and promised God he would carry it as long as he lived, who stopped after a falling out with his uncle, and who assumes the name was handed to somebody else years ago

For nineteen years, if there was food and there were people, he was the one who stood up.

That is how it worked and nobody had ever voted on it. A birthday, a launching, a funeral lunch, the school thing in November: at some point somebody would look at him, and the room would go quiet without being asked to, and he would say the words. He was not the oldest and he was not the loudest. He was just the one.

The night his first grandchild was born he sat outside on the step at two in the morning and told God he would carry that as long as he lived. Whoever else came up. However old he got. He would be the one who opened it.

Then there was the business with his uncle.

He is not going to describe it and neither am I, and that is not delicacy, it is the entire architecture of this place: an inventory is a courtroom with the chairs moved around. It is enough to say that words were said on both sides in front of the whole family, and that the following March there was a gathering and he did not stand up, and somebody else did, and it was fine.

That was six years ago. He goes to everything. He sits about halfway down. And what he is certain of, though nobody has ever said it and he has never asked, is that the thing was handed on. That there is a name for what he used to be and it belongs to somebody else now, the way these things move, quietly and without ceremony and without anybody being cruel about it.

You may have had a name like that. Not a title. A thing you were, in a room, that people relied on without discussing. And you may believe it was reassigned while you were not looking, because that is what happens to names in families.

What He gives to the ones with no line

I want to take you to a passage in Isaiah that is addressed to two groups of people who, in that world, had no standing at all in a house.

The foreigner, who has no ancestral claim. And the eunuch, who has no descendants, which in that culture meant no name going forward, nothing carrying on, no line. Those were the two categories of person for whom the question who are you was going to be answered badly.

And this is what God says to them.

Even unto them will I give in mine house and within my walls a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.Isaiah 56:5

You are given a place and a name by somebody who did not consult the room before giving them. Isaiah 56:5 puts the giving inside His own house and within His own walls, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept both of them in your hands for six years.

A place and a name

Read the two nouns, because He gives both and they are not the same gift.

A place is where you are. A name is what you are called there. Everybody understands losing one and keeping the other: a man can have a chair in a room and no longer be anybody in it, and that is a common and quiet kind of grief, and it may be exactly what you have felt for six years.

He gives both. And He gives them, notice, in mine house and within my walls, which means the giving is done inside a house that He owns, so no one else in it has jurisdiction over the gift.

You have a place and a name given inside a house whose owner did not consult anybody about it. Isaiah 56:5 is where that is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it out of a promise to foreigners and eunuchs and sets it beside a man sitting halfway down at a family gathering.

And then the last clause, which is the one that speaks straight to what you are afraid of. An everlasting name, that shall not be cut off.

Cut off is the exact language of what you think happened. A name passes to somebody else. A line ends. A thing you were gets taken up by another man and it is nobody's fault. And God, speaking directly to the people for whom being cut off was the defining fear, says: not this one.

You are carrying a name that cannot be transferred, because the one who gave it is the only one who could move it. It is written in exactly those terms, and that is what everlasting and not cut off mean when they are said to those two groups, and the Spirit of God has kept it in your hands through six years of you assuming otherwise.

Two different things, and only one of them moved

Now let me be exact, because warmth without precision is no use to a man of your kind.

Somebody else opens the gatherings now. That is true, and it should be true, and it would be strange and unhealthy for a family to leave a silence for six years out of loyalty to a man who stopped standing up. The role moved. Roles move. If it comes back to you it will come as a fresh thing, and if it never comes back that is not a punishment.

The name Isaiah is talking about is not that. It is what you are in the house of God, and it is not a function, and it has never been on any rota.

You lost a job in your family and you did not lose your standing in His house, and only one of those was ever at risk. Scripture puts this giving inside His own walls and calls it better than sons and daughters, and His Spirit has been holding that distinction steady while you collapsed the two.

And I am not going to tell you the family has been aching for you. I do not know that and neither do you and it would not help. What I know is that the seat you are sitting in halfway down is not a demotion. It is a chair you chose, in a room where nobody moved you.

You have a standing that no gathering has the authority to reassign, and a job is not a standing. Scripture keeps the place and the name inside His walls where nobody else has jurisdiction, and the Spirit of God has held that distinction steady while you collapsed the two.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true on that step, before you say a word.

You hold a place and a name in His house tonight, and six years of not standing up never touched either one. Isaiah 56 gives both, inside His own walls, and calls the name everlasting and not cut off, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about one man and one family rather than a promise to a category of people long ago.

And hear what is not being asked of you. You have permission to sit down tonight without taking anything back and without being asked to stand up. Nothing written requires a returning man to reclaim a function before he belongs, and the Spirit of God is not asking you to promise to carry it again, because a promise made under shame is only the next thing to break.

Whatever He does about you and your uncle after this is His to decide, and whatever He does about who opens the next gathering is the family's business and His. Neither one is the price of the door.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, once, and let the last one be the last thing said. You are in Christ, and what you stand on is His giving and not the strength of anything you said on a step at two in the morning; it was given to you and it did not lapse the March you stayed seated. It rests on what is written and it is carried by His Spirit. Jesus said that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt in his heart will have what he says, and the mountain here is a picture of a name quietly passing to somebody else. Speak to it. Whatever He does about who opens the next gathering is His to decide, and it is not the price of the door.

  1. Name I was known by and stopped carrying, you were not passed to somebody else while I was gone. It is written that He gives a place and a name in His house that is better than of sons and of daughters, and in the name of Jesus I take mine up again, because His Spirit has kept it in my hands.
  2. Fear of being cut off without anybody meaning to be cruel, you are the exact thing that verse was spoken against. Scripture calls it an everlasting name that shall not be cut off, said to the very people for whom cutting off was the whole terror, and the Spirit of God has held it steady for six years.
  3. Lord, You gave the place and the name inside Your own walls, and nobody in this family has jurisdiction over that. I sit down as one who belongs here and not as a man waiting to be reinstated, and I bring You nothing to reclaim, only the word You gave.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
