She read contracts for a living for nine years, which is the whole trouble.
The letters had been coming for four months, the ones in the window envelopes, and she was getting to the mail before anyone else got up. And one Tuesday morning she stood in her own hallway with three of them in her hand and said it out loud, quietly, the way you say a thing you mean:
God, if these stop, I will tell him. All of it. That week.
They stopped. Not dramatically. A phone call, an arrangement, a different letter, and then nothing.
She has not told him. That was two years ago and she has not told him and every month that passes makes the telling bigger, which is how that works, and somewhere in the second year she stopped praying entirely.
Not because she stopped believing. Because she is a woman who reads contracts, and she knows what a breach is. She said if, and then she got the if, and then she did not do the then. In her mind she signed something in that hallway, and she is in default, and default has consequences that are written down somewhere and are not up for discussion.
So she has been living the way a person lives when they think the agreement is over: not fighting it, not appealing it, just quietly no longer acting like a party to it.
You may have a hallway. It may not be letters. But if you have ever caught yourself thinking that you triggered something, that there is a provision somewhere that you activated by not doing what you said, then you are reading the same document she is, and I want to show you that the document does not say that.
An agreement and a covenant are not the same instrument
Let me be precise, because precision is the thing that helps here.
An agreement has two parties, and both are bound, and the whole logic of it is conditional. You do this, I do that. And crucially, if one side fails, the other side is released. That is not cruelty, it is structure: an agreement is designed to be voidable, because both parties needed protecting from the other one.
A covenant, as God makes it, does not work like that. It has terms, and I am not going to pretend it does not. But the terms are not you-do-this-or-I-walk. The terms are what He swore, and He swore them knowing exactly what you would do.
Read what Paul says in the middle of a hard argument about people who genuinely did fail:
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.Romans 11:29
You are still called this morning, and there is no provision anywhere for a review. Romans 11:29 says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has held you inside that while you read yourself out of it.
Without repentance
Repentance there does not mean what it means at an altar. It is the older sense: a change of mind, a going back on a decision.
Paul is saying that when God gives and when God calls, He does not later reconsider. There is no clause in that sentence. There is no provision for review, and there is no schedule of events that terminates it, and the reason is not that God is careless about what you do. It is that He decided, before He gave, with the whole of your record in front of Him, and a decision made with all the facts is not disturbed by the facts arriving.
You are still called this morning, and He has not gone back on it, and you did not have the authority to make Him. Romans 11:29 is where that is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it out of an argument about Israel and puts it in a hallway with three window envelopes in it.
Now hear the thing I said I would not skip. There are terms.
The covenant is not a document with nothing in it. God says what He will be and what He does and what belongs to those inside it, and He also says come, and turn, and walk. That is real. Your choices are not irrelevant and I am not going to tell you they are, because a woman who has been hiding something for two years knows better than that, and she would stop reading if I pretended otherwise.
But here is what the terms actually divide into, and getting this right is the whole article.
You stand inside something whose keeping was never assigned to you. Scripture puts God's oath and His faithfulness on His side of the page and the coming back on yours, and the Spirit of God is the one who has kept the first half unbroken through two years of you not doing the second.
What is settled and what is yours
So let me lay it out plainly, in two columns, the way she would if this were on her desk.
Settled, and not by you: that He called you. That He gave. That He does not change His mind about either. That the covenant holds. That there is no breach clause, because He did not write one and you cannot draft one on His behalf, however good you are at drafting.
Yours, and genuinely yours: to come back in. To stop acting like you are not a party to it. And, in the days after, whatever He puts in front of you, which may well include a conversation you have been carrying for two years.
Notice what is not in the second column. Not: to make it valid again. Not: to restore it. Not: to earn your way back to the first column. You cannot repair what did not break, and the effort to repair it is what has kept you out of prayer for a year.
You have work in front of you and none of it is the work of holding this covenant together. The word puts it plainly, and that is what it means that the gifts and calling are without repentance while the invitation to come stands open, and His Spirit is the one who has been holding the first and issuing the second every day of the two years.
So here is what is true in the hallway, before you say anything at all.
You stand inside the covenant this morning, and the sentence you said with the envelopes in your hand was never what was holding it up. Romans 11 says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a particular woman in a particular hallway rather than a doctrine about a nation.
And hear what is not being asked. You have permission to come back in without repairing anything first. Nothing written asks a returning woman to restore an agreement before she is a party to it, and the Spirit of God is not asking you to draft anything today, because a new promise made under shame is only the next thing to breach.
Whatever He does about the conversation with your husband after this is His to decide, and He may well decide it soon. But it is a thing you do from inside, and it is not the price of the door.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, once, and let the last one be the last thing said in that hallway. You are in Christ, and what you stand on is His faithfulness and not the strength of anything you said with the mail in your hand; it was given to you and it did not lapse in the two years. It rests on what is written and it is carried by His Spirit. Jesus said that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt in his heart will have what he says, and the mountain in this hallway is a clause that does not exist in the document. Speak to it. Whatever He does about the conversation after this is His to decide, and it is not the price of the door.
- Clause I have been reading myself out of, you were never in this covenant and you have no page here, and I say that now in the name of Jesus. It is written that the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and His Spirit is the one who has held me in it while I read myself out.
- Default I have been living under, you are not a judgment and nobody entered you. Scripture puts His oath and His faithfulness on His side of the page and the coming back on mine, and the Spirit of God has kept the first half through two years of me not doing the second.
- God, You called me and You gave, and You have not gone back on either one. I come in as a party to this and not as a woman in breach, and I bring You no new promise, only the word You already gave.
