The Engine Turned Over

This message is for the driver who sat in a stalled cab on a county road in a whiteout and promised God he would never take another Sunday haul if the engine turned over, and who took one the following March and has taken every one since

It was a Thursday in January on County Road 9, and the snow was coming across the field sideways, and the engine died.

He was forty one. He had been driving eleven years and he had never been scared in a truck before, and he was scared then, because the heater goes when the engine goes and the phone had one bar and then it had none, and the drifts were coming up the tires while he watched.

He tried it. Nothing. He tried it again. He sat there for a while with his hands in his coat and he did the arithmetic on how long a man lasts, and then he said it out loud, in the cab, the way you say things when there is nobody to be embarrassed in front of.

God, if this engine turns over, I will never take another Sunday haul as long as I live.

It turned over. First try, like it had been waiting for him to finish.

He got home at eleven. He told his wife. He meant it entirely and she knew he meant it, and for a while it was simply how things were: the loads got planned around it, he lost a little money, he did not care.

Then March. A load that could not wait and a broker who would not move and a payment that was due, and he took it, and he told himself it was once.

That was nine years ago. He has taken every Sunday since. Not one of them was a decision the way the first one was a decision. And when he drives County Road 9 now, which he does most weeks, he does not look at the field.

You have a road like that. A place where you said something to God with your whole chest because you thought you might be about to die, and then life got ordinary and the words went where those words go. And you have a stretch of it you do not look at.

The thing under the shame

There are two floors to this and only one of them is shame.

Shame is the top floor: I said it, and I did not do it, and I know the exact month I stopped.

The floor under that is what keeps a man from praying for nine years. It is the quiet arithmetic that says the promise was the deal. He got the engine and God got the Sundays, and he did not pay, so the account is in arrears, and a man in arrears does not walk into the office and ask for another loan.

I want to take you to a man in a burned city, sitting in the ash of everything he warned people about, because what he wrote there is the plainest thing in the Bible about mornings.

It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22-23

You have been living on daily mercy for nine years and not one morning of it was withheld. Lamentations 3:23 says they are new every morning in the same breath as great is thy faithfulness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been bringing the morning around while you were not counting.

New every morning, and you were there for all of them

Count them, if you want to. Nine years of Sundays is about four hundred and seventy. Nine years of mornings is about three thousand three hundred.

Every one of them came. Not one was withheld. You woke up in the dark and put the coffee on and went out to the truck, and the mercy that got you through that morning had been made fresh that morning, and you did not thank Him for a single one of them and it arrived anyway.

That is not a rebuke. Read it again. It is the opposite of a rebuke. It is the evidence that His side of this was never suspended while yours was.

You have been living on daily mercy for nine years and it never once stopped coming. Lamentations 3 says they are new every morning and it says great is thy faithfulness in the same breath, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been the one bringing the morning around while you were not counting.

Here is what I have learned on long roads. A man will believe that God is merciful in general and that his own account is the exception, and he will hold both of those at once for decades and never notice the contradiction. The mercies were not for other people. You were in the truck. It was your morning.

You are a man God has been keeping, not a man God has been carrying a grievance against. That is what is written in Lamentations 3, and the Spirit of God is the one who has kept it true through nine years of you assuming otherwise.

What the promise actually was, and what it was not

Now I want to say something honest, because I am not going to pretend the promise did not matter.

It mattered. You gave your word to God in a cab you thought would be your coffin, and He heard you, and He is not a man that He should forget it. If the Sundays come back, good. That is between you and Him and it is a real conversation.

But the promise was never the covenant. The promise was a thing you said inside a covenant that God swore, and a thing said inside a house is not the foundation of the house.

You are standing on something you did not build and did not manage to knock down. That is the whole weight of the word compassions fail not, and His Spirit is the one holding the foundation, not you and not your Sundays.

And I am not going to walk you through the nine years. Not one Sunday of them. Because an accounting is a courtroom with the chairs moved around, and there is no courtroom here, and if I built you one I would be doing the exact thing this site exists to refuse.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in the cab, before you say anything.

You stand inside the covenant this morning, and the Sunday promise was never what was holding it up. That is Lamentations 3 read plainly, where the reason we are not consumed is His mercy and His compassion and nothing at all on our side, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that land on a particular driver on a particular road.

And here is what nobody is asking you for. You have permission to come back in with empty hands and no new promise in them. Nothing written asks a returning man to swear a bigger oath to cover a broken one, and the Spirit of God is not asking you for one this morning, because a promise made in shame is only the next thing to break, and you have been broken enough.

Whatever He does with your Sundays after this is His to decide. Maybe they come back. Maybe He wants something you have not thought of. That is His call and it is not the price of the door.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, once, and let the last one be the last thing said in the yard. You are in Christ, and the ground under you is His faithfulness and not the strength of anything you swore in a whiteout; it was given to you and it did not lapse in March. It rests on what is written and it is carried by His Spirit. Jesus said that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt in his heart will have what he says, and the mountain on this road is a sum: I got the engine and I did not pay, so the account is closed to me. Speak to it. Whatever He does with your Sundays after this is His to decide, and it is not the price of the door.

  1. Promise I made in a stalled cab in a whiteout, you were meant and you were not kept, and I hand you over now in the name of Jesus. It is written that His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, and His Spirit has been bringing the morning around the whole time I was not counting.
  2. Arithmetic that says my account is in arrears, you are not the covenant and you have no ledger here. Scripture says it is of His mercies that we are not consumed, which puts the whole sum on His side, and the Spirit of God has been keeping me on mornings I never thanked Him for.
  3. Lord, You turned that engine over and You heard what I said, and You have not held the nine years against me. I come back in through a door and not a hearing, and I bring You no new promise this morning, only the word You swore.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
